It starts in your trash and it can cost you thousands.
Identity theft affects nine million Americans each year.
A new business in Rapid City, Badger State Recovery, is offering you a way to prevent your identity from getting stolen, with a free two day shredding event.
Shredding important documents is an easy way to keep your identity safe.
B.S.R. manager, Justin Durand, invites customers to watch their documents be destroyed, ‘the right way.'
"That's one option that we're showing people here at our facility, letting them come in and they can actually see basically everything from cradle to grave," said Durand.
Not only does B.S.R. shred your important documents to protect your identity, but it also recycles the bales of shredded paper afterwards. Durand says this gives them, "new life."
Durand estimated that they shredded around 6,000 pounds of documents today, and he is excited to see what day two bring.
The shredding event will continue through tomorrow at Badger State Recovery's location at 1905 Lombardy Drive in Rapid City. Durand considers the event their open house, but it will not be their last day of free shredding. He plans to do this annually.
