Cement plant's proposed expansion could mean more jobs in Rapid City

A proposed expansion project at a local cement plant could mean more jobs for KOTA Territory.

GCC Dacotah submitted a construction permit application for a renovation project. The permit is under review by the State Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. The application is to upgrade the plant's kiln six system and to reduce emissions.

Economic Development Director Ben Snow said says it's exciting to see one of the communities existing employers upgrade their facilities.

"It's significant from the standpoint of not only maintaining the Rapid City work force that they have which are high paying jobs, very professional level skilled high wage positions, but they might even grow a little bit. They might see 5- 10% of their workforce grow there," said Snow.

The South Dakota Department of Environmental and Natural Resources will offer a 30 day public comment period on a draft permit for the project in the next few weeks.
