Small Big Horn wildfire a reminder to be careful of dry forests

Posted:

A small wildfire in KOTA Territory serves as a warning about the dry conditions across the area going into this summer.

The fire started Wednesday on the steep face of the Big Horns overlooking Highway 14.

The two-acre blaze was only about 30 percent contained by early Thursday afternoon, but firefighters were already moving into the "mop up" phase.

Even though the fire was sparked by lightning, responders say conditions are still very dry.

And as summer approaches and people head to the mountains to camp, the risk grows.

"This time of year and these conditions are very unusual," said Big Horn National Forest public information officer Deb Lozinski. "So we're just keeping our fingers crossed that it's not going to go crazy really fast."

To avoid human-caused fires in such dry conditions, Lozinski adds to make sure campfires are out and cold before moving on, and always have water and a shovel with you in case things get out of hand.
