USD students accused of falsifying tax returns

Posted:

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) _ Vermillion police say a group of students from the University of South Dakota participated in a scheme to file false tax returns with stolen identities.

In a news release, the department says the students who lived on campus were attempting to collect names and social security numbers in the Vermillion area. Police say the information gathered was used to file fraudulent tax returns.

The scheme came to light after the police department investigated a man acting suspiciously at an ATM. Police say they learned the man was using a debit card that had been issued as part of a tax return to withdraw money and was concealing his identity from the ATM camera.

USD President James Abbott said the school is assisting in the investigation.
