Tourism leaders hit the streets of Rapid City with Presidents mascots in tow

The final push is on leading up to the 2012 summer tourism in Rapid City and the Black Hills.

Members of the Rapid City Convention and Visitor's Bureau spent Tuesday downtown to drum up excitement.

They tied signs reading "Tourism Works" on all the Presidents statues.  And, the Mount Rushmore Presidents mascots themselves are taking a stroll through town to visit with guests and locals.  Many people stopped the Presidents on the street to have their picture taken.

Michelle Thomson, Tourism Director for the Rapid City Convention and Visitor's Bureau, said this kind of campaign is important because tourism is vital to the Black Hills communities.

She says without it, each household in South Dakota would have to pay an additional $833 in taxes.

Thankfully, she said, that's not the case.  In fact, she said tourism leaders couldn't be more optimistic about the upcoming season.

"The tourism season is looking really great," Thomson said.  "Because we've had such fantastic weather, the visitors have already started rolling in and the hotels are very happy with their pre-reservations.  Rally reservations are looking really strong.  So we are really looking forward to a fantastic year."
