Crazy Horse celebrates Ziolkowski's 65th anniversary

Posted:

Today marks the 65th anniversary of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski moving to the Black Hills to begin work on Crazy Horse.

To commemorate the day the memorial will waive admission fees to visitors who contribute cash or food to the KOTA Care and Share Food Drive.

Work on Crazy Horse began in 1948 and today marks 65 years since Ziolkowski accepted the invitation from Lakota leaders to begin work on the sculpture.

Mountain carvers triggered a 600 ton blast at 1 p.m.

"Today just recalls a very humbling beginning and now you're at a location that has been deemed an American Icon by international visitors. And what's fun today is to look at all the faces and see all the nationalities that are here," said Crazy Horse spokesmen Patrick Dobbs.

On June 2nd and 3rd the monument will be hosting the annual Crazy Horse Volksmarch, the only time of year where hikers can walk alongside the arm of the monument.
