Wyo. coal companies produce less, cut workers to roll back costs

Posted:

Powder River Basin coal prices hit a two-and-a-half year low in March.

Now companies are taking measures to curtail costs.

Arch Coal is cutting back production. The St. Louis-based company has already idled three dragline excavators this year.

Peabody Energy and Cloud Peak Energy are laying off temporary contractors and reducing overtime hours.

Cloud Peak reports it's also trying to avoid buying new equipment.

Coal companies are hopeful the warm weather that drove prices down over the winter brings prices back up this summer.
