Wildfire contained near Hill City

Posted:

Despite last weeks rainfall, wildfire's are still burning up parts of the Black Hills.

The meadows fire located one mile south of Deerfield lake at Deerfield and Gillette Prairie roads, began Sunday night at 5 pm.

The fire is contained on 18 acres of private and forest service land.

Forty firemen were on scene Monday, and will continue securing the perimeter for the next few days. Fire commanders say they're surprised at how the dry season continues to increase the fire risk, despite recent moisture.

"Very rare to get a fire up here in April. Last year there was two feet of snow here. We were wondering how to get up here and do all the work," said Incident Commander, Brandon Sanchez.

The cost of fighting the fire is already upwards of $20,000. A possible cause has not yet been released.
