Bear Country U.S.A. welcomes 34 baby bear cubs

Bear Country U.S.A. celebrates 40 years in business by welcoming 34 baby bear cubs.

The new group of cubs at Bear Country U.S.A. features five sets of triplets.  When they're born, they are the size if a stick of butter. Right now, they're about three to six pounds.

This is the one weekend of the year the public can see them face to face.  So, visitors said, they weren't going to let this weekend's rain stand in their way.

"People say 'We don't care, we're just coming to see the baby bears.'  And it's just a small window of opportunity," said Pauline Casey, Bear Country U.S.A. President.  "They (the baby bears) grow so fast, by June they'll be 35 to 40 pounds."

Bear Country opened on August 24, 1972, the year of the Flood.  Casey says the crews building the park's fences eventually all left to help pick up debris.  Bear Country leaders made do with the people they had left and opened the park almost at the end of the summer tourism season.

Casey says there is a celebration planned for August 24th of this year to mark the 40th anniversary.

The park officially opens for the 2012 summer season on May 1st.  There is a soft opening planned for April 27th.
