Education bill gathers opponents

Governor Daugaard's controversial education reform bill is raising opposition amongst educators and lawmakers alike.

House Bill 1234 calls for merit pay to be awarded to the top percent of South Dakota teachers. It would also put an end to tenure in an effort to make it more difficult for ineffective teachers to continue as educators.

Now, an online petition against the bill crafted by Spearfish teacher Cory Heidelberger aims to show the public's strong distaste for the measure. Eighteen hundred signatures from around the state have already been gathered, and heidelberger says he hopes legislatures will take the voice and demands of the people seriously.

"Not one of those proposals is clearly linked to student achievement. merit pay is proven not to improve student achievement. there is imperial data from schools across the nation and internationally that proves that merit pay does not give you conclusive results," said Heidelberger.

Various republican legislators have also spoken out against the bill. They say the opinion of educators isn't being considered and a longer time frame is needed to fully flush out a plan.
