Sheridan snow removal budget 70 percent gone despite mild winter

A perceived side effect of low snowfall is less spending on snow removal.

But that's not always the case.

Sheridan Public Works director Nic Bateson said Sheridan has gone through about 70 percent of the city's snow removal budget this winter.

Even though there haven't been many major snowfalls that require plowing, there have been a number of small ones.

The snow also melts with the warm weather, creating slick spots when the roads re-freeze.

Bateson said that means putting down sand and de-icer more frequently, which is more expensive than just plowing.

He said the percentage of the budget spent thus far is about the same as other years.
