Rapid City Council approves lengthening terms

Posted:

After months of debate, by a vote of 6 to 4, the Rapid City council passed two ordnances that would extend term lengths.

Rapid City's mayor and aldermen will now serve three-year terms.

The first three-year term for the mayor will begin in 2013; while aldermen will start three-year terms in 2014.

The three year lengths would eliminate the Weifenbach effect, meaning sitting aldermen would not have to give up his or her seat to run for mayor.
