Rapid City designates more money to combat pine beetles

Posted:

The Rapid City Council votes to increase the efforts to combat the pine beetle epidemic within city limits.

The council approved a $200,000 increase budget allowance for the Parks and Recreation Department Reimbursement Program.

The program offers landowners up to a 75 percent reimbursement for tearing down infected pine trees.

Council members say although it is a large sum of money, taking care of infected trees would reduce fire danger in the future.

"We have inspected around 30 properties and only two properties of those 30 have mountain pine beetle on them so this week has been a good week because we haven't found a lot," said Jerry Cole with the Parks Department .

Cole says the survey discovered more than 900 infested trees so far.
