Some KOTA Territory kids spend their day off from school having a wild experience: learning about raptors.
Monday morning, the Rapid City Public Library hosted the Black Hills Raptor Center.
Kids got to hear the individual stories of two owls and one red-tailed hawk; as well as learn about the place birds of prey have in the eco-system.
Organizers say this program serves to entertain and inform the kids, and is a great way to get up close and personal to birds they can only see in the wild.
"They start to have an interest in the outdoors and may be driven to go out and learn more about the outdoors and learn more about hunting and fishing opportunities, bird watching opportunities, hiking- getting out and being physical and enjoying what we got," said John Halverson from the Black Hills Raptor Center.
Organizers hope the education doesn't end there. The kids also made bird feeders as part of the program as a way to observe local birds.
