Youth get hands-on agriculture experience

Posted:

4H youth received hands–on experience on Sunday about the agriculture industry. Students participated in a livestock judging competition in St. Onge.

It's the 21st year the Lawrence County 4H Club has been operating a judging school. The participants were scored on three beef classes, one swine class and one sheep class.

4H leaders say the state and well as students benefit by having the youth involved in agriculture.

"The children that do these hands–on judging of livestock take that back to their high schools and college careers and hopefully start up in the agriculture business as ranchers or farmers" said 4H leader Roxy Tetrault.

Prizes were awarded to the top three contestants. They will compete in the statewide fair this August in Pierre.
