SD Attorney General fights for child, victim rights

Posted:

It's been a busy legislative season for Attorney General Marty Jackley.

After sparking a state wide crack down on synthetic drugs, Jackley also contributed his focus to the issues of victim and child rights this year.
One of his proposed bills would limit the number and timeline of state appeals for convicted criminals. Jackley says those appeals cost tax payers thousands and leave victims without closure.

Inspired by the controversial Casey Anthony case, Jackley's proposed legislation on missing children is already gaining traction on the house floor.

Senate bill 43 would hold parents accountable if they fail to report the disappearance of a child within 48 hours. He says the house committee is in talks to fine tune the bill.

"They're analyzing the bill to see if they want to reduce that 48 hours down to 24 hours and I think those are all positive discussions. My main goal is to have something in place to protect children that are missing, or to address those situations where parents are placing a child, as we've seen in SD, in landfills or laundry," said Jackley.

Jackley's anti bullying bill,  which encouraged schools to adopt and enforce an anti bullying policy, failed last month.
