Spearfish to expand early education program

Posted:

Plans to revamp east elementary school are underway in Spearfish.

Superintendent of schools, Dave Peters says renovations have begun to convert a portion of the school into an all day kindergarten and special education building.

Using the building would take pressure off of West elementary school, which has faced crowding because of a growing kindergarten population.

Peters says it's spacious enough to accommodate more than sixty students.
But he says there's a lot of work to be done before that can happen.

"It's going to cost a little more than we thought it would to put it back together. I think probably in the $3 million dollar range to do that. Not only do we have to put the whole insides back together, it's kinda of gutted at this point, but we need to fix the playground so it works for little kids, and we need a security entrance," said Peters.

While a specific timeline is uncertain, Peters says he hopes to have the building ready for use by 2014.
