SD union workers use pipeline delay for PR campaign

Posted:

While the president has temporarily stopped the approval process for the Keystone XL pipeline, union workers are taking the opportunity to do a little public relations.

Heavy equipment operator Ryan Randolph of Local 49 in Rapid City calls the waiting game frustrating.  But, he and other members of his union are hoping to turn the delay into a positive by promoting the direct jobs that will come from the pipeline.

Randolph said Thursday that union workers in the state will have the opportunity to work close to home, and to showcase the safe, skilled workforce.

"As a union operator, I depend on the work no matter where it is, but this one would be convenient for all of us.   It's important because I live here, and it makes me proud to know that union work can come here."

Last month, the Obama Administration denied the pipeline permit but the President left the door open for Transcanada to apply for a new pipeline route that avoids Nebraska's environmentally sensitive Sandhills region.
