The engineering industry faces a shortage

The engineering industry could soon see a severe shortage unless a new, qualified workforce is found.

A 51% shortage of power engineers is expected nationwide within the next 5 years. That's because 16,000 engineers are approaching retirement age.

The engineering industry plans to attract highly–skilled workers by awarding scholarships and internships to undergraduate and graduate students. And while that's a start, Power Engineer Wanda Reder says the industry faces another challenge.

"The other dynamic that we have going on is that the power industry is changing at the same time," said Reder.  "Not only new load growth coming in day in and day out, but the generation mix is changing and we also continue to add new technologies."

Reder says 80 new faculty members will be hired to teach students skill sets that will help them with the new technology.
