Analysis: U.S. schools not as bad as some people think

For years, people have considered the American education system on the decline.

Now an analysis by a national research firm finds that's not really the case.

Tom Loveless with the Brookings Institution writes that the way people view international test results is flawed.

When putting together global rankings, Loveless writes, there needs to be more "wiggle room."

The differences between two countries might not be statistically significant.

He also writes people usually look to policies of top performers as reasons for bumps in rankings, which some, like Sheridan's Amy Wyatt, recognize can be misleading.

"There are other countries that probably have a better education system than we do," she said, "but, having said that, we still need to give ourselves credit for the good things that we do do in education."

You can see Loveless' full report here.
