School of Mines student housing expansion moves forward

The School of Mines student housing expansion moves forward.

The 1.6 million dollar tax increment financing would be used to purchase and demolish low income housing apartment buildings between Elm and Birch Avenue.

Ward 3 Alderman Jerry Wright proposes that developer, Dream Design International, vacate the alley way in the middle of the block. Wright says that would ultimately remove half the area from the TIF and take the alley out of the city's hands.

Once the area is vacated, it would be divided, with half the alley way going to the School of Mines Foundation and half going to another proposed project on that block.

Wright says that would provide Dream Design President Hani Shafai more area to design better student housing.

Shafai agreed to vacate the alley, as long as the other proposed project on the block does the same.

"We intend to vacate the alley for more green space around the campus and also to provide a safer place to walk for the kids around the school," says Hani Shafai, President of Dream Design International.

Two multi story, privately owned apartment buildings would be built to provide additional housing for School of Mines students.

The Rapid City Council will make a final decision on the TIF proposal onTuesday.
