Old West wagon maker shows products at Stock Show

It's like a blast from the past, but this Old West wagon business just keeps rolling along.

The Hansen Wheel and Wagon Shop is a family owned business based in just north of Mitchell.

For 35 years they have built horse-drawn wagons, and other old west goods like canons and wheels, the way the pioneers used to between 1850 and 1920.

Founder Doug Hansen says his global business stemmed from a love of history.

He says being in South Dakota is one of the reasons he identifies with the pioneering spirit of the Old West.

"It's a great part of our heritage here in South Dakota, and we're happy to bring it to life and have a part in helping people re-live it. Nobody needs a chuck wagon today, but we're very busy building chuck wagons, because people are appreciative of their history," said Hansen.

In addition to his wagons being used by farmers and ranchers every day, many are displayed in museums, and have been used as props in movies.

The company operates online at http://www.hansenwheel.com/.
