SD students combat Native American stereotypes

Posted:

They're powerful words routinely used to describe people living on American Indian reservations: poor, violent, alcoholic and obese.

But students at one high school on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota have a message: They're more than that.

About 50 students at Todd County High School have made a YouTube video to refute claims about reservation life portrayed in an ABC special featuring the Pine Ridge reservation.

The students' video, titled ``More Than That,'' has been viewed more than 35,000 times.

Feather Colombe is one of the students featured in the video. She says she wanted to make it to combat stereotypes. Colombe and other students have been invited to a Native

American education conference in Washington next month to present the video.
