The holidays can be an especially difficult time for families struggling through the economic downturn. So, a local organization looks to brighten the season for foster children.
The Rapid City office of the Department of Social Services plans to distribute gifts to a few hundred children in foster homes.
It's part of Guardian Tree Program. Social services officers collect both gifts and cash donations.
Here's how it works: you visit the office on the corner of Campbell and East North Streets, pick a tag off the Guardian Tree with the child's name and age , and then go shopping.
"Our guardian tree is very important because it helps to support our foster parents in the area to provide supplemental gifts for the children that they care for in their homes and also helps give joy to the children who are receiving those gifts," said Tara Mitchell from the Department of Social Services.
They ask that you do not wrap the gifts. They need to be dropped off by December 9th.
