Students learn to fly planes in Rapid City

Posted:

Kids in KOTA Territory take the time to fly planes to Denver and back reaching heights of 40,000 feet. But don't worry, it's just a simulation.

Students in grades 6 - 8 got the chance to spend the day with the School of Mines' Aero Design Team Saturday on the Rapid City campus.

The kids got to use Microsoft Flight Simulator: an advanced computer program that puts them in the pilot's chair.

They also got to see an aero plane simulation.

Club members say this class offers exercises in teamwork for potential future pilots and engineers.

Profits from the class go to the Aero Design Team as they compete nationally to make and fly radio-controlled aircraft.
