Poor customer service frustrating Americans

Posted:

New findings on consumer satisfaction with the service in retail chains are showing that people are getting fed up with bad service.

"I've had instances where there's been rude people at the store, and I left." said Abbagail Demetria Urich, a downtown shopper.

A recent consumer report survey reveals that 64% of Americans are unsatisfied with the customer service they receive at retail stores.

While big chain stores like Walmart and Sam's club rank among the worst in customer service,  local businesses say they can offer something unique to their customers.

"You'll get that personalized attention. also because it's a smaller store, the employees are more familiar with everything in the store." said Katie Twedt, owner of Bella Boutique in downtown Rapid City.

"The local stores in downtown are a lot more open and friendly. They want to make a relationship with you, verses just to wait on you." said Lisa StrongBull, a downtown shopper.

When dealing with customer service problems, only 16% of Americans deal with the issue in person. Only one in five people actually call in and complain over the phone.

The survey says the best way to handle a complaint is bypass the automated phone menu, and be persistent in your claims.

Keep detailed records about how long you've been on hold and who you speak with. Also, tell people about your experience, and if necessary, post it on twitter and facebook.
