Twenty-one-year-old South Dakota School of Mines and Technology electrical engineering major Levi Boggs says he wants to do great things during his career, but to do that, he needs people to notice him.

"It's all about being able to make that impression and keep that impression going," Boggs said.

Boggs is just 1 of around 20 students attending a social skills workshop put on by the School of Mines career center.

Cathy Payne, a School of Mines staff member teaches School of Mines students how to approach strangers, to find a common ground, and how to network.

"They need to know how to start and stop conversations and this will greatly help them with their career success," Payne said.

Payne says employers look for engineers who have great social skills because they are the people most likely to make or break potential business deals with clients. She says it's important for students to make a good impression, and Boggs agrees.

"When a person is thinking about who they remember most from an event, it's those people who make those impressions they remember first," Boggs  said.
