RAPID CITY, S.D. -

They lean to the right ...

They lean to the left ...

This is not political philosophic tilting.

So many headstones are tipping at Mountain View Cemetery that the Rapid City Council wants to step in and set the aging markers straight.

The Legal and Finance Committee on Wednesday recommended the full council authorize spending $25,000 so city staff can begin re–setting monuments.

The city Parks and Recreation Department says it will take several years to correct the headstones' posture.

Doing so is needed to protect visitors and cemetery workers from the chance of hundreds of pounds of stone collapsing on them.

Future funding for grave marker realignments at the city cemetery will include raising costs of burial plots.
