CHADRON, Neb. -

Enjoy the great outdoors.

That's what staff with the Nebraska Forest and Grasslands say they want people to commemorate as an important milestone.

Next week marks the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

The Act was the work of conservationists, which spanned about 30 years to increase accessibility to public lands.

Forest and Grasslands Supervisor Jane Darnell explains the groundwork for this act was laid out in the 1930's, 40's and 50's.

"A number of folks over those decades kind of worked towards that end and in 1964,"  explains Darnell. "On September 3rd, the Wilderness Act actually passed."

To celebrate the golden anniversary of the Wilderness Act, a series of events are being held throughout the region early next month.
