Shad Olson

Amid the funding freezes, and dismal economic news, there is a bright spot for KOTA Territory's bread and butter industries, 2009 was one of the strongest tourism years on record.

Visitors to rapid city spent 273-million dollars last year.  Putting the city well ahead of the tourism industry at both the national and regional levels.

Spending on things like food, lodging, and convention bookings posted substantial increases, with vacation package sales up 81-percent.

Michelle Lintz with the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce credits KOTA Territory's status as a bargain destination.

Lintz says the chamber is also placing increasing emphasis on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as a source of marketing Black Hills travel.
