South Dakota lawmakers want novelty lens ban

It isn't quite the same as your mother saying"You can poke an eye out with that!" But South Dakota lawmakers have a motherly warning about turning brown eyes blue.

The House Health and Human Services Committee pushed Senate Bill 115 to the full House today.   The bill would ban nonprescription contact lenses that enhance or change the color of eyes. Supports of the ban say novelty lenses cause infections.

Also passed in committee today is House Bill 1241, allowing fireworks to be used during New Year's.  The bill actually would allow people to use the fireworks from Dec. 23 to Jan. 2.  The full Senate gets a crack at it later this week.

The Senate agrees it is a good idea to make liquor sales a little more open; approving House Bill 1002.  The bill lets cities and counties to pass ordinances allowing liquor sales on Sundays and Memorial Day.  The bill also allows 18- and 20-year-olds to sell or serve liquor as long as the business doesn't get more than half it's sales from alcohol.
