Possible electricity rate increase draws customer reactions

With the threat of a significant electric rate increase hanging over their heads, Black Hills Power customers take a stand.

Black Hills Power Corporation wants to increase rates by 26.6%.  For the average customer that's about $18 more per month, a cost customers feel will hit their pocketbooks too hard.

"I think it's going to have a big impact," said Steve Skromeda.  "It's going to hurt a lot of businesses, it's going to hurt a lot of consumers.  I think it'll be very hard on people."

But Black Hills Power representatives feel the increase will help them provide safe and reliable service for the customers.  And for those who would struggle with the rate hike?  The company is willing to work with their customers.

"We do have programs where we will work with customers if they are having difficulties paying their bills and help them spread out those increases," said Kyle White of the Black Hills Power Corporation.

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission will hold a public hearing to discuss the increase early next year.
