Because of his 'extraordinary' support for the National Guard, U.S. Sen. John Thune receives the Charles Dick Medal of Merit.
At Camp Rapid in Rapid City, the republican says he is 'humbled and grateful' to get such recognition from the National Guard Association of the United States.
The medal is named in honor of Maj. Gen. Charles Dick. While a member of Congress in the early 1900's, he was responsible for legislation that founded the modern National Guard.
Thune says he will continue to work to address challenges facing the National Guard.
The medal can be awarded to state lawmakers, governors and congress members.
