Gallup poll: support for stricter gun laws waning

Posted:

For the first time in two decades, a national survey shows a major shift in attitudes toward gun laws.

While gun ownership has remained steady over the past two decades, the newest Gallup poll shows record low support for stricter gun laws.  In 1990, 78 percent of Americans favored stricter gun laws, while only 17 percent thought they should be kept the same.

Today, those numbers are virtually equal, at 44 and 43 percent respectively.

"No, I don't think it surprises me, because if people look at the laws where they have carry laws, like we do in South Dakota, the crime goes way down," Jim Jester of Rapid City said.

"Gun laws don't really do anything," said Jester's son, Jason.  "It doesn't prevent crime, all it does is make it harder for a citizen, a law-abiding citizen a firearm or whatever, and that's a constitutional right."

Support for stricter gun laws dropped five percent from last year.  This is the first time in the history of the poll the two sides have been equal.
