Scientist preaches against embryonic stem cell research

Posted:

A well-known scientist comes to KOTA Territory to make his case as to why the state should not legalize embryonic stem cell research.

On Wednesday afternoon, bioethicist David Prentice, PhD addressed more than 150 audience members on the topic of stem cell research.  While Prentice and his group, the Family Research Council, believe embryonic stem cell research is morally unethical, they do support adult stem cell research.  Prentice claims adult stem cell research has resulted in more than 70 cures, compared to zero for embryonic research.

“It ignores what's already helping the patients, the adult stem cell,” Prentice says.  “Everybody's got a limited pocket book, I think we ought to be focusing our resources on the patients first and that's adult stem cells.”

The advocacy group South Dakotans for Healthy Cures maintains adult stem cell research has not resulted in as many cures as prentice claims and that embryonic cells are more flexible and have the potential to lead to more cures.
