Clone War

You could call it a pre-emptive strike.

A newly formed group wants to ensure embryonic stem cell research isn't allowed in South Dakota.

The Coalition For Cures Not Cloning supports adult stem cell research, but is against embryonic stem cell research. The reason, according to the president of the South Dakota Family Policy Council Chris Hupke, is because of 10 years of research and no proof it works.

A proposed measure for the 2010 ballot would allow cloning and embryonic stem cell research in South Dakota.

If approved by voters, members of the coalition say it would create a giant loop hole in the existing statewide cloning ban, and create an ethical dilemma for many doctors.

"As a physician, I gave an oath when I was a young man in training to preserve life. We really think experimenting with human cloning and with stem cell research is really not the direction to go in as a state," said Rapid City family physician Sam Huot.

South Dakotans for Lifesaving Cures is leading the charge to make embryonic stem cell research legal. They believe it holds great promise for treating cancer, diabetes, and Parkinson's disease.
