RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) The innovative Thunder Valley Development on the Pine Ridge Reservation just won significant grant for being ... well ... innovative.

The Bush Foundation announced Tuesday it had awarded Thunder Valley Development Corp. $500,000 as a winner of the foundations Bush Prize for Community Innovation. Thunder Valley is currently building homes on a 34 acre site near Kyle that will form the nucleus of a safe and supportive environment for families and children. It's also just started in on a new element of its plan.

"We're incredibly excited to be getting the Bush Foundation Community Innovation prize," said Cecily Englehart from Thunder Valley. "And one of the things we're most excited about -- as far as an innovative piece of our work -- is the community building that we're creating and we broke ground on that just last Monday."

The Bush Foundation received 127 applications for the Innovation prizes and awarded just seven.
