The time to winterize your home is now

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) You may be enjoying the mild temperatures this week, but it is time to start thinking ahead toward the winter months.

There are many ways you can be losing heat from your home.

Some items to look at would be your fireplace to seal cracks and make sure your damper is shut.

Indoor wall mounted air conditioners allow cold air to sneak in, so be sure to cover it appropriately.

Attic access doors are usually not insulated, which could allow warm air to leave and also create a possible mold problem.

Outside of the house, make sure hoses are unhooked and dryer vents are fully closed.

"Nice, warm, tropical air coming out right here and it's open. Boy I'll tell you what, if I was a critter, that's where I'd wanna be on a minus 10 degree day. Gotta make sure these things are closed," Black Hills Inspection Services Bruce Bowden said.

Another thing - if you have a sprinkler system, make sure to get that winterized sooner than later.
