RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) The 28th Annual Great Black Hills Duck Race is coming up Sunday, July 30, when some 16,000 rubber ducks will be launched into Rapid Creek to compete for cash prizes and a chance to win one-million dollars.
One hundred percent of the proceeds raised will stay local and will benefit ill and injured children served by Regional Health. Children's Miracle Network program coordinator at the Regional Health Foundation Shawn Powers and CMN Duck Race Chairman and 93.9 Morning Animals host Kevin Phillips tell us a little more about the event.
This really is an amazing opportunity for the community to have a great time in some clean competition, competing for over $24,000 in prizes, and raising money for a great cause. The race begins at 2 p.m. with the Drop of the Flock near the West Main McDonald's at Rapid Creek. It ends one-and-a-half miles downstream at Memorial Park, where the winners will be announced.
Children's Miracle Network Hospitals help area children get the medical care and attention they need. The program at Regional Health works to fund programs, medical equipment and services for ill and injured children throughout the Black Hills region. One hundred percent of the money raised through special events like the Duck Race stays locally to benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals at Regional Health.
Over the years, the Duck Race has become an annual event that organizations and individuals across the community look forward to sponsoring.
This event is possible thanks to the generosity of businesses throughout the Black Hills community. This year, sponsors have donated 31 prizes valued at about 24-thousand dollars total that will be won by the luckiest, if not the fastest, ducks in the race. Duck sponsors are eligible for prizes ranging from $100 in value, to a first prize of 5-thousand dollars cash.
There's also a chance to win one-million dollars. There are five ducks that have been pre-selected as Million Dollar Ducks and if your racing duck crosses the finish line in first place AND is one of the five pre-selected ducks, you win one million dollars.
A number of options are available. You can sponsor a single duck for five-dollars, or get a five-duck package for $25, which includes a duck race t-shirt. Or, you can sponsor a Very Important Duck package for $150, which includes 15 ducks sponsored in your name; three duck race T-shirts, and a picnic basket.
Ducks can be purchased online at RegionaHealth.org by clicking on The Great Black Hills Duck Race picture. You can also complete and submit a registration forms available at many of our Duck Race sponsors including McDonalds, Black Hills Community Bank, Black Hills Federal Credit Union, and Family Thrift Center, as well as Big D in Rapid City and Sturgis and at Dairy Queens throughout the Black Hills. They're also available at 93.9 The Mix, and Regional Health Children's Miracle Network office.
In addition to purchasing any last-minute ducks at West Main McDonalds that morning, visitors can meet the region's largest duck and watch the Drop of the Flock into Rapid Creek at 2 in the afternoon. At Memorial Park, fun activities, games, music, and more will be available at 1 o'clock until the race finishes.
Every dollar raised by this event supports Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. People often sponsor ducks to honor children in their lives who have dealt with serious medical issues. It's why I personally want to be involved every year. The proceeds benefit the children right here in our community who need the help offered by Children's Miracle Network Hospitals at Regional Health.
