SUMMERSET, S.D. (KOTA TV) - According to the National Bike Registry, it is estimated that more than 1.5 million bikes are stolen every year.
That is one of the reasons why the Summerset Police Department established a bike registry for the citizens of Summerset. It’s a free process and if your bike is stolen or even pawned, officers can check a database to possibly get your bike back to you, but more often than not, they find abandoned bikes.
”What happens when bikes are stolen, it’s just a means for transportation from a-to-b,” said Officer Justin Taylor with the Summerset Police Department. “It’s a crime of opportunity, they see the bike sitting there, they jump on it, ride to their destination and then ditch it. “
