SDSU will buy land in Sturgis for agricultural research

STURGIS, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Last week, Governor Dennis Daugaard signed Senate Bill 48 into law authorizing the purchase of 112 acres of by South Dakota State University.

The land is located adjacent to the Sturgis Municipal Airport and is to be used for agricultural research.

Despite it being a government sale, no taxpayer money was used to purchase the land. It was funded by proceeds from a research park payout and agricultural experiment station fees through SDSU.

The purchased land will take the place of land the school was renting near Wall. That property is no longer available.

A similar bill, Senate Bill 49, authorized the Board of Regents and SDSU to spend $665,000 to purchase 73 acres of agricultural land in Brookings County. That bill is still sitting on the governor's desk.
