SDSU investigating excessive force report by campus officer

BROOKINGS, SD (KSFY) - South Dakota State University is investigating allegations of excessive force against one of its campus police officers.

Melissa Mentele posted details about the arrest and photos of her daughter's injuries on Facebook Sunday. She wouldn't talk to KSFY News on camera Monday, but she told us on the phone that the officer approached her daughters around 11:30 Saturday night while walking with friends.

Mentele says the officer threw one daughter to the ground, leaving her with bruises on her arms, back and legs.

She was charged with resisting arrest.

Mentele says her other daughter was also thrown to the ground for trying to intervene and was charged with obstruction.

A spokesperson for SDSU says the university has engaged an outside agency to assist in this matter. The spokesperson would also not release the name of the arresting officer.
