Relief drive benefits homeless and at-risk veterans and their families

SPEARFISH, S.D. (KOTA TV) Kick off the New Year serving those that served, that is slogan for the 5th Annual Veterans’ Holiday Relief Drive.

Hosted by the South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary and its partners, this statewide drive aims to assist veterans who are homeless, at-risk of being homeless and their families in their time of need during the holidays. They are accepting buddy bags or buddy baskets filled with essential household or personal care items. The students of West Elementary School in Spearfish stepped up and helped donate 4 buddy baskets to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 164.

“I really believe that this project, even if we don’t have a coordinator, is going to last for years because our community is so excited about giving and we do have a great support not only from the schools and the community,” said Micheline Nelson, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 164 president, “it’s helping others…the true message of Christmas.”

The relief drive runs through the end of January, 2017. Here is a complete list of drop locations in KOTA Territory.
