Rapid City hosts Black Hills Mountain Fest

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Rapid City is sponsoring its first Black Hills Mountain Fest, using the Black Hills Fat Tire Festival as a jumping off point.

The three-day festival Friday through Sunday includes mountain biking, bike races, hiking, rock climbing, live music and food.

"Our festival promotes outdoor recreational opportunities within our region and showcases the awesome ways people enjoy our beautiful Black Hills," said Kristy Lintz, city recreation specialist. "It's a great way to network with other outdoor enthusiasts and with businesses promoting outdoor recreation."

Races begin Saturday morning with the Black Hills Trail Series Run. The Fat 5K and 10K race will start at 9 a.m. The Mountain Bike Race, an 11-mile sprint event, begins at 6 p.m. Preregistration is preferred for these events but day-of/on-site will be available.

Sunday's event is the Youth XC Bike Race for riders 9-14 years old. This event will is free and registration will begin at 11 a.m.

All races will take place on the hills of Hanson-Larson Memorial Park with the start and finish in Founders Park.

The Festival also includes a welcome social Friday from 4-10 pm at the Lost Cabin Brewery, 1401 West Omaha.

Race packet pickup and on-site registration will be from 5-8 p.m.

Saturday's events will include the races as well as a group night ride at Founders Park 1510 W Omaha. The event will conclude Sunday, Father’s Day with meet up group mountain bike rides and the Youth XC Bike Race.

Proceeds from the festival will help fund outdoor education, trail maintenance and opportunities for youth in Rapid City.
