Presidents Plaza project is dead

On Monday , Rapid City Mayor, Steve Allender, said the Preseident Plaza project is dead.

After a decade long battle with the Presidents Plaza Group, and around $700,000 spent on designs, Allender believes it is time to go in a different direction.

During Christmas break, the mayor outlined a list of options for the parking lot at St. Joseph and Fifth Street that the council will look at on Jan. 3.

The options range from leaving the lot as it is, to going with a new development group to build a plaza with retail shops and a parking structure.

"I don't know what will be built there yet, but it should be something that is consistent with our downtown master plan. . . and something that will serve Rapid City," said Allender.

Hani Shafari and the President Plaza Group's agreement with the city was terminated in September.
