RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA-TV) The Phantom of the Mathews Opera House is a joint effort between The Matthews and the BHSU Theatre Dept.

Matthews Opera House opened in Spearfish in 1906 for stage productions and traveling shows. The Phantom of the Matthews Opera House melodrama was written by local historian and BHSU alum Paul Higbee to show off the renovated space in the 1970s.

The melodrama first appeared at The Matthews in 1976 and became a summer staple for locals and visitors throughout the 80s and 90s. Melodramas are a way to get the audience involved in the show, as a viewer you are encouraged to cheer on your heroes and boo the villains.

Shows are every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 2 at The Matthews Opera House in Spearfish and Tickets available online at www.MatthewsOpera.com.
