RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA TV) - Ever working on a project but can't finish cause you don't have the right tools?

Well you may be in luck.

Saturday September 9, 2017, marked the grand opening for The Shop which is a community workshop where you can learn how to use tools to complete the do it yourself projects

The "Makerspace" movement of has finally hit Rapid City making it one of more than two thousand in the world.

One of the new members of The Shop, Jackie Thomas, says “everybody that I've talked to has been really interested and been like oh that's a great idea. It’s someplace we can kind of go build things and have some comradery between other people with similar interest."

They have various membership options, so once you sign up and pass the safety tests, you get to use any of the equipment on site.

Owner of The Shop explains that they have “a full wood shop, a metal shop with welders, break, plasma cutters, things like that and then we also have an electronics area with 3-D printers and some PCB Etchers with laser scanner, so all those things they are available for you to use."

And eventually they will rent out equipment to people that want to take tools home as well as host various classes in shop.

"We are up for ideas, you know whatever people want to learn we'll try to find the person that will help teach that and really make it a community event," exclaims Krause.

But the ultimate goal is to get people interested in working with the hands.

"It's really just to help advance the knowledge and desires for craftsman skills in general," says Krause.

You must be 18 to be eligible for a membership but you do not need any prior experience in craftsmanship to sign up.
