RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) Friday morning brings the KOTA Care and Share Babel in the Street Drive, a fund-raising even that can bring a smile to your morning commute.
"This event just starts off the holidays with everybody being so generous, coming together to help the people in our community," said Lynda Mentelle, director of Church Response. "It's fantastic."
Here's how it works: drive on St. Joseph street to the Duhamel Building between Fifth and Sixth Streets. Make sure to get in the left lane. Pull up and get a bagel from Black Hills Bagels and a cup of Dark Canyon coffee or a Pepsi product. Any donation you make goes straight to helping the needy.
"We serve between six and seven hundred families a month," said Mentelle. "A lot of people that live in motels here or elderly. ... We are meeting the needs that foodstamps don't."
We went over Thursday to check on the bagels for the drive and found Black Hills Bagels owner Deb Jensen in front of a large rack of un-baked bagels.
"These are only a few of the white chocolate chip bagels that we will be bake starting at one o'clock Friday morning," she said. "About 1500-2000 bagels will all be out there for everybody to consume starting at 6:30 in the morning."
Black Hills Bagel's Wolf Peters added: "People just donate as much as they want per bagel, all of the money goes to bringing food to the less fortunate during the winter months. It's a great thing to do. It's great for the community to come together and do this."
This year year marks the thirteenth anniversary of the KOTA Care and Share Bagel Drive. It runs from 6:30 through 9:00 a.m. Friday.
