Arrest made in Rapid City homicide

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - UPDATE: Police have arrested 26-year-old Joseph Rich of Rapid City for second degree murder in connection with the investigation into the early morning homicide on East Adams Street.

Shortly after 2:10 a.m. on Jan. 1, police were dispatched to the 300 Block of East Adams Street for a reported disturbance. On arrival, police located three injured subjects, one who had been stabbed and was unresponsive on the ground. The unresponsive subject was declared dead on scene. The two other people were taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The deceased is identified as 20-year-old Juan Legarda Jr. of Rapid City.

Police determined that several people had fled into the home at 306 East Adams Street. The Rapid City/Pennington County Special Response team was called out to assist as police executed a search warrant.

Joseph Rich was located inside the home and, after further investigation, was arrested for second degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and three unrelated warrants.

This case has been handed over to the Pennington County State’s Attorney Office for prosecution.
