Emergency plan important for families during severe weather

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) Severe weather can cause wide spread significant damage and that is why it is important for you to have a severe weather emergency plan.

Emergency plan contact information. Contacts and numbers made up.

Your plan will largely depend on the type of structure you live in because it may not be safe to be in your home during a tornado.

If that's the case for you, try to make a few friends with neighbors who have adequate shelter, such as a basement.

Because most tornadoes happen during the afternoon, families may not be together when it occurs.

"Having all those plans in place, being able to contact family members if everybody's at different places. Someone's at school. Someone's at work. You know, who are you going to call, where are you going to meet, how are you going to get back together."

If a tornado does occur... Chances are cellular communications may be slim to none... If they are slime... A text message is more likely to get through rather than a voice call.
